Westering offers a wide choice of subjects that enable pupils to go on to University, Technikon or various colleges, or to continue with a career in business or a trade. GRADES 8 AND 9 (Std 6,7) (JUNIOR SECONDARY COURSE) (Examination Subjects) There are six compulsory subjects: 1. English - 1st Language 2. Afrikaans - 2nd Language or Xhosa 2nd Language 3. Mathematics 4. General Science (Science and Biology) 5. History 6. Geography In addition, Grade 8 pupils do Woodwork and Home Economics. GRADE 9 (Std 7) Subjects 1 - 6 as for Grade 8, but pupils must choose TWO of the following subjects: Woodwork / Home Economics / Accounting / Typing / Music GRADES 10 - 12 (Std 8-10) (SENIOR SECONDARY COURSE) (Examination subjects) In addition to two official languages, pupils must choose four other subjects from those listed below: As it is logistically impossible to offer pupils a completely free choice, certain subjects have to be linked. In order to obtain MATRICULATION EXEMPTION (Endorsement), which will entitle a pupil to attend university, the pupil must: Pass, on Higher Grade, two official languages (one first and one second language) (i.e. English 1st Language HG and one other offered by the school - Afrikaans or Xhosa 2nd Language) and at least TWO subjects on HIGHER GRADE from Groups B, C, E and F, but including one subject from each of two different groups. The six subjects taken must come from FOUR different groups. SUBJECTS OFFERED: GROUP SUBJECT GRADE A English 1st Language Higher/Standard Afrikaans 2de taal Hoër Xhosa 2nd Language Higher B Mathematics Higher/Standard C Physical Science Higher/Standard C Biology Higher/Standard E Geography Higher/Standard E History Higher/Standard F Business Economics Higher/Standard F Accounting Higher/Standard F Home Economics Higher/Standard F Typing/Computying Standard F Woodwork Standard F Geography Higher/Standard F Computer Studies Higher Computer studies can be taken as a 7th subject in Grades 10, 11, 12. If Physical Science or Computer Studies is taken, Mathematics is compulsory. Note: Geography is in groups E and F. Home Economics counts as a HG subject for exemption (endorsement) if at least one of Maths, Science or Biology is passed. Accounting counts as a HG subject for exemption (endorsement) purposes only if the candidate passes Mathematics on at least the SG.
