The school opened in 1970 under the principalship of Mr P.A. Blackbeard. There were 10 teachers, 178 pupils, 10 classrooms, no uniforms and no fields. Physical education classes in the early years consisted of pupils picking up stones on the would-be fields. In 1991, Mr Lionel Heath took over as principal and, in that year, rugby had its most successful year ever, winning thirteen of seventeen games. The school celebrated its twenty-fifth anniversary in 1995 with a number of spectacular sporting fixtures and cultural events. In late 1997, Mr Ken Ball took over asHeadmaster.
The wide cultural curriculum extends from Ballroom Dancing to Chess, from the Student Christian Association (called SWORD) to Interact and the Environmental Society, from Drama to Debating. Pupils regularly take part in various Olympiads and the school always provides a number of "A" aggregates. Westering offers a full spectrum of sports in which all pupils participate at the school, endorsing its philosophy of "a healthy body, and a healthy mind".

Sport started in 1970 with one U14 rugby team (led by the first Master-In-Charge of Rugby, Mr Bester) playing on the Verkenner Primary School fields and other borrowed venues. From 1971, there were senior and junior rugby teams, as well as tennis, netball, athletics and hockey teams. The first home rugby game was in 1973, with coach Niel Deetleef's First Team in blue jerseys and the other teams in stripes. A collarless white jersey with blue cuffs and neck was introduced in 1974 when, for the first time, fixtures against another first team took place. In 1976 the first Saturday Derby Days could be held as there were two fields. Frank Oliver (All Black)
addressed the school in that year. The school's first tour was the '77 JHB Rugby Tour. The following year Sevrin Anderson became the school's first EP Schools' and SA schools' rugby player (He later played Gridiron Football in the USA), while from the 1990 team came our only EP player, Morné van der Merwe (of Sharks fame).

In 1986, the Westering Old Scholars' Association donated a set of present "harlequin" style jerseys to the First Team. Also, the Gavin Akers rugby scoreboard was inaugurated in memory of the Deputy Head who was regarded as "the father of rugby" at the school. Mr Akers also served the EP High Schools' Rugby Union with distinction. 1986 was also a great year for Girls' hockey with 7 girls being selected for the EP team and only 4 goals being scored against them. Boys' First Team hockey provided 2 SA players: Paul Williams in 1979 and Aneurin Armstrong in 1986.

Prominent teachers include Ros Howel (Springbok Woman's Hockey captain) and John Earl (the weather man on television). Ivy Gcin was the tea lady and is now a Member of Parliament. Past pupils who have achieved include Angela Killian (national actress), Kathy Le Fevre neé Gibson (international model) and Helen Lewis (Miss SA Princess). Provincial and National sports achievers include Gareth Calder (EP Hockey), Lorna Lumb (EP Athletics), Michelle Mulder (Border Hockey), Wayne and Roger Pheiffer (SA Cycling), Wayne Phipps (SA Judo), Greg Olivier (SA Wrestling), Keith Hoffeldt(SA Karate),  Ilzé Waite (SA Karate), and Sharon Nicholson (SA Biking). Two present pupils represent the country :Ryan Branford (SA Judo) and Claudene Ridden (SA Karate).

Westering hopes that, in the spirit of the school song, we are all provided with an opportunity to "Make us what we ought to be".
