Churches
One of the reasons that Barrydale came into existence is due to a church. This church served Barrydale and its surrounding areas once the Tradouw Pass was built. This church is called the Dutch Reformed Church and was officially 120 years old in September 2000. As the years went by and the diversity of the town grew, new congregations began to function. The Evangelical Reformed Church of South Africa was formed in 1944 whilst the New Apostolic Church of South Africa was formed in 1960. The Seventh Day Adventist Church has been functioning since 1984 and have been meeting every Sabbath (Saturday) since then. The Non-denominational Church has been going since 1989 but the building for the Church was only erected in 1997. The congregation used the Library Hall up until the new church was built. There are approximately twenty Catholics in Barrydale. The size of the congregation does not warrant a full time priest or even a church. As such the Priest from Swellendam comes to Barrydale once a month to celebrate Mass. This used to be done in the Non-denominational Church building on the hill, but is now held once a month in a members home.
