Climate and geography
Barrydale has a perfect positioning for the tourist who would like to experience a region with wineries, fruit farms, hot water springs and panoramic views, on ones way to the Garden Route. As such the route - R62, is not taking one away from the Garden Route but rather is an alternative route to the N2 in getting one to George - where the Garden Route actually starts. The Guesthouse is only an hours drive from the coast where one can see the whales at Witsands. The Guesthouse is also not far from Swellendam, which is the third oldest town in South Africa after Cape Town (1st) and Stellenbosch (2nd). The little Karoo is known for its hot summer days and its chilly winter nights. Summer temperatures often reach 34 degrees Celsius whilst the milder winter days usually range in the mid twenties. If one is lucky then Barrydale receives snowfall on the mountains surrounding the town in winter. The mountains around Barrydale are made up of Cape Fold Mountains with few trees and a lot of fynbos. The average annual rainfall rarely exceeds 300mm. The area in which Barrydale lies is very diverse. The Langeberg Mountains are to the South, with the Karoo to the North and the fruit growing areas to the West.
