Something out of NothingFoto: Gudrun F. Toelstede Jan
Schoeman (Outa Lappies) is a living legend. He almost lives the life of a
hermit, but is an inspiration to each and everybody because of his philosophy:
The artist’s work comprises lantern houses and wagons made from poker-work, crushed tins, broken coloured glass, rusty nails, wire, wooden sticks, and of course his hands and his philosophical brain. His art form is called Outsider Art because it falls outside the usual norms of conventional art. He is a highly individual man without any training in art, only driven by his creative spirits. By using materials from the roadside, the veld and dumps he wants to make the world a better, prettier place. He is well-known around the world. Since late 2002 he has added a hand to each of his light houses to symbolise his philosophy: “Use your hands and you’ll never be hungry.”
Since 2003, Bodo G. Toelstede guarantees: Each of Outa’s artist’s works has a certificate which guarantees it is an original made by Outa Lappies. Suggested
retail price for a lighthouse from R 750, small hand from R 120, big hand from R
150. The Western Cape Tourism voted Outa Lappies the“Tourism Personality of the Year 2000”
