She was born in Vryheid, KZN. She matriculated in 1974 from St. Chad’s School in Ladysmith. She obtained a National Secretarial Certificate from Inanda Seminary. She studied printmaking at Rorke’s Drift, 1978-79, and received a Fine Art Diploma.

In the 1980s she left KZN to settle in Johannesburg where she has been involved in various projects. In 1984-1985 she was Manager of the Fuba Collection and Curator of the Fuba Gallery. From 1986 to 1988 she was Project Co-ordinator at the Alexandra Arts Centre, Alexandra, Johannesburg. Other projects include the Thupelo Arts Project (1988-1992), Outreach and Development Program Co-ordinator for Africus 1995, the first Johannesburg Biennale (1993-1996), Director Africus Institute for Contemporary Art (1996-1998), and in 1998 she founded Zakhe Arts in Alexandra, Johannesburg. In May 2000 she was appointed Project Co-ordinator of Metro Mall, Johannesburg, and she has been involved in the Architectural Artworks Program for the building of the new Constitutional Court.She is a Board member of several selection committees including those of the SANG and the JAG. She has participated in important group exhibitions in SA and has held one solo exhibition entitled Images of South Africa in 1986 at the National Museum and Art Gallery, Gaborone, Botswana. She has won two awards for her art and she has given a number of papers on museums both in SA and abroad. Her work is represented in major museum collections in in this country and abroad as well as in private collections in SA and abroad.
