Blockade A war tactic that isolates an area that is important to the enemy.

Cannibal A person who eats human flesh.

Cargo Goods carried by a large vehicle, like a truck, train or ship.

Clipper ship A very fast sailing ship of the 19th century.

Cobalt A metallic element that can be charged with a magnetic field.

Colonise When a developed country establishes a colony or settlement in another weaker country.

Conquer Defeat or overcome an enemy.

Contagious A disease that can be spread from one person to another by infection.

Deploy To strategically distribute weapons and soldiers.

Determined Firm and unwilling to change their mind.

Displacement Forced removal from home or country.

Dominance Power or control over something.

Economy The system of producing, distributing and using goods.

Enormous Very large.

Epidemic A large outbreak of a contagious disease.

Expand Make or become larger.

Expedition A journey organised for a specific purpose.

Exploit Use or manipulate something to one’s advantage.

Famine A serious lack of food.

Federalist A member of a political party in American history that supported the idea of a strong and centralised federal government.

Fertile Capable of producing crops.

Fortress A large fort or protected town.

Frontier The wilderness on the edge of a settled area in a country.

Graze Letting animals feed on grass and plants.

Heritage Practices that are handed down by past generations.

Impressment The act of forcing a person into government service.

Inconclusive Without a final decision or result.

Industrialisation The change from a subsistance economy where there is little or no machine or mechanical development, to a highly mechanised, production-oriented economy. Industries develop on a wide scale.

Interior An inland region.

Invaders Members of a military force that enter another nation’s country.

Invasion When a military force enters a country and tries to take it over.

Investors People who give money or capital to a company in order to get more money back when the company makes a profit.

Isolate Place apart or alone.

Livestock Farm animals.

Manufacturing Making goods on a large scale using machinery.

Migration Moving from one place to another.

Monopoly Exclusive control over something or an economic situation where there is one supplier and many buyers, meaning that the seller can determine his own price.

Nationalism The love of a country, identity with its heritage and willingness to sacrifice for it.

Navigator The officer on a ship in charge of guiding the ship from one place to the next.

Nomadic Groups or tribes of people who travel and settle in different places.

Orient The countries of Asia, including the Far East or Eastern Asia.

Peers A group of people of similar status or age.

Plateau An area of level, high land.

Protectorate A region that has some an autonomy and self government, but remains under the "protection" of the "mother" country.

Refugee A person who seeks safety in another country or area.

Resentment A feeling of bitterness about something that happened.

Resource An available source of wealth or a supply that can be used when needed.

Slave A person who is the property of an owner and has to work for him without pay.

Status Position or standing among other people or countries.

Stronghold A fortified place of security and survival.

Telegraph Equipment used to send information over long distances using electricity transmitted by wire.

Territory An area of land that has been marked out.

Treaty A written agreement between two states.

Uncharted Not yet drawn on a map or investigated.

Veteran A person who has served in the armed forces for a significant amount of time.

Victor A person or country that has defeated or beaten an enemy.
