LESSON OBJECTIVES: This subsection deals with ways in which people have travelled and transported goods over time and space. Different ways of travelling and how they began are discussed. These will include inventions from countries and cultures all over the world, from ancient times to today.

ASSESSMENT: Each unit has various activities to help learners fulfill the assessment standards set out by the Revised National Curriculum Statement (History) for Grade 4.

Learning Outcome: The learner is able to collect sources, and to communicate knowledge about animal powered tranport orally.

Activity 1

Choose one of the following animals:

  • Camel
  • Dog
  • Elephant
  • Donkey
  • Horse
  1. Find out as much as you can about the ways this animal has been used for transport and travel over the ages. Look for information in your school or public library.
  2. Give a short talk (not more than 1 minute) in front of your class. Describe the ways man has used that animal for transport. Is this animal still being used today?

 


Learning Outcome: The learner is able to communicate knowledge and understanding about animal powered transport by making a collage.

Activity 2

  1. Divide into groups of 2-3.
  2. Find as many pictures as you can of animals being used for travel and transport. You might find pictures in magazines and on the internet.
  3. On an A3 cardboard, use your pictures to make a collage. Try to include as many different animals and ways in which they are used as possible.You could also do this activity for these other units in this lesson:
