Apartheid Dutch word which means apartness. Apartheid became a policy in 1948, which was used by the South African government to racially divide the people. This policy was used with other legislations, which prohibited cross marriages between races. African people were not allowed to enter certain areas because they were reserved for white people.

Boycott It is to reject, stay away from work, school etc.

Campaign It’s a planned action to achieve political, social and or economic goals.

Coalition An alliance between temporarily political parties who come together for political reasons to serve a specific goal. During coalition all parties keep their identities.

Constitution A body of rules governing the government structures.

Democracy It’s a system of government whereby people select their representative through a voting process. Democracy recognises the freedom and right of every man and women, those rights are protected by the country’s constitution.

Mass It’s a political term often used to refer to a mob or people during the struggle.

Township Refers to a municipal area, resident. In South Africa during apartheid, only residents where African people lived were referred to as township. Although apartheid has ended, the term is still in use, and those areas that were previously occupied by black people, are still dominated by them. However, the new South Africa has allowed anyone to live anywhere he/she likes. And many people have since moved to the places where they were only for white people. It’s unlikely that some white people moved to the townships.

Tricameral Three chambers. This system was used by the South African government in 1983 to describe the parliament, which was established under the 1983 Constitution, whereby a representative from the Coloured and the Indian group became part of the parliament
