LESSON
SUMMARY
The Berlin Conference of 1885 gave way to a scramble for African colonies by European countries. Africa was colonised mainly for her natural resources that supplied raw materials for European factories. Economic competition among European countries led to a race for African territories. The experience of colonisation inspired the rise of African nationalism in the early 1940s and struggles for independence from colonial rule followed the Second World War. The damage done by colonial rule left Africa ridden with economic troubles, political instability and poverty. The continent also became a pawn in the Cold War conflict. The rivalry between the anti-communist West and pro-communist Eastern Bloc manifested in civil wars in Mozambique and Angola among other conflicts. In an effort to address the continent's problems the Organisation of African Unity was set up in 1963.
