Jonathan starke
Team leader and Doctor
I am the team leader and Doctor for the 44th South African National Antarctic Expedition. Coming to SANAE is dream come true for me. It is a rare opportunity to experience a wild and undiscovered place and face a unique challenge. My job is varied an interesting, certainly not a regular nine to five and I am privileged to be supported by an excellent team.

Gracious Banda
Mechanical engineer
My involvement in the SANAP entails the following:
-Ensure optimum operation efficiency and the reduction or preferably avoidance of breakdown maintenance on SANAE IV plant and equipment.
-Maintenance of works services - water, electric, gas and compressed air.
-Make sure that our air conditioning system beats the sub-zero, in extremes up to minus fourty (-40 degrees C), outdoor temperatures by maintaining our indoor temperatures at ambient.

August Arnold
Diesel mechanic
I always wanted to come to Antarctica to see what this continent is in real life and to experience it in full and not only looking at pictures. It is a dream what actually came true and I.m really privileged to be here with the full support of my Family. I.m happily married with my wife Madeleine and two children, Armand, my son eleven and my daughter Amorique nine years of age. This is one of the most interesting places I have ever experienced in life. I enjoy every moment being here, even the white outs are awesome. My main tasks here are to service and maintain the power generators and to assist Aiden, the other diesel mechanic and the other team members with their tasks. I also enjoy Aiden's Biltong recipe.

I am extremely priviledged to be here for my second time around, thanks to the patience of my wife, Marida and my two children,Lyle who is working in London and Lee Anne who is studying at the University of Stellenbosch.
It is hard to describe the feeling of being back here again, the place that was my home for 15mths two years previously, a real case of `de ja vous`
August and myself assist the Mechanical Engineer, Gracious with the day to day running of the base and Joe our team leader with all logistical operations.I also have the secret biltong recipe.

Shadrack Podile
Meteorologist
Hi South Africa, meet Shadrack from Mmakau. I'm the team meteorologist responsible for
doing weather observations. I look after the meteorological equipments and fix when
broken. This is my fourth envolvement with the programme. My first overwintering was in Marion (M57), followed by Gough (G47 and G49). I guess I'm hooked. It took few people to get me down here. I don't regret being here. Thank you to all the guys, you know yourselves.

Brian Bowie
Scientist
I'm a Pretorian by birth, but I have been lucky
enough to have moved quite extensively during my life. One of my
goals in life is to see all seven continents and as clichéd as it
may sound this is a fulfillment of a dream for me. I am one of the
scientists in the field of space physics. Antarctica is in a unique
geographical position relative to the earth's magnetic fields, making
it an ideal place to see and measure the various effects the sun has
has earth. One of my responsibilities is to record the southern
lights, the Aurora Australis. When I'm not working and the weather
is good, I try to get some ice climbing and snowboarding done,
trying my best not to fall down a crevasse. It is about enjoying the
