Heavy lift carne in operation
The 36th South African National Antarctic Expedition is an historical one. It was the first team to over-winter at the new SANAE IV base. It was also the first mixed-gender team.

David Frank

Team leader
The small print on the brochure got David. He thought he was going off to spend 16 months on a tropical island, and can still be seen hunting around for the palm trees.
David
Hein

Hein de Beer

Electronic engineer
Hein grew up in the sleepy town of Potchefstroom, and finds the bright lights of Antarctica very exciting. He has applied for Antarctic citizenship and intends to open up a gym chain around the continent.

Etienne Hugo

Electrical engineer
Etienne has a thing for heights: he likes them and spends a lot of time trying to reach them, whether by climbing mountains or flying planes.
Etienne
Paul

Paul van Staden

Mechanical engineer
No mention of Paul could be complete with a mention of his inamorata, Joanita. Paul and Joanita got married in June 1998.

Fanie "Bez" Bezuidenhout

Diesel mechanic
When he's not in icy wastelands, Bez enjoys fishing and hunting. Bez returned to the South African National Defense Force after SANAE.
Bez
Jacques

Jacques la Cock

Diesel mechanic
Equally at home in the kitchen as in the workshop, Jacques has big plans for a career change after SANAE. Look out for the Sastrugi Inn when next you're in Cape Town...

Aithne Rowse

Medical doctor
The first (and, as yet, only) woman to over-winter with SANAE. Skilled at guiding camels through the Kalahari, treating the sick and infirm and whipping up wicked lemon-meringue pies.
Aithne
Andre

Andre Larisma

Physicist
A man with a chequered past and a bright future in either space, physics or farming. Andre is the first doyen of SANAE IV's Club Aurora.

Pieter Swanevelder

Physicist
Piet is the consummate dinner party guest, never at a loss to provide scintillating discussion over the meal. Piet is proud of his roots in the burgeoning metropolis of Ellisras.
Piet
Burt

Burt Wilson

Physicist and deputy team leader
Also bakes excellent hot-dog and hamburger rolls.
