The Hague-750th Anniversary

The city of the Hague will celebrate its 750th Anniversary in May 1998 and the IPA District Haaglanden is working closely with the City Authorities, in Foriegn Embassies and the Hague Police to ensure the success of this large event. A highlight of the celebrations will be the Police Week, working under the motto of "The Hague Unites the Nations" from the 18 - 24 May.

To emphasize the caleidoscopic character of this week, two uniformed police officers have been invited to attend via the accredited embassies in the Hague.

South Africa's tour representatives depart from Johannesburg on the 15th of May.

We wish them a most enjoyable trip.
To date, promises of participation have been made by more than 35 countries. Police bands, police motorised teams and displays by mounted officers are included in the programme.

Ton Vlasman, Secretary of the IPA District Haagland, has asked me to emphasize that two officers from each Section is the maximum IPA input that can be accepted.

However, Ton is anxious that all Sections should have the opportunity to send representatives.

IPA South Africa will be represented.

FOREWORD
An invitation from the founder
The year 2000 approaches and it will usher in a new Millennium. We look to a better and more peaceful world. On 1st January 2000 we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the foundation of the International Police Association.

From very humble beginnings there were early doubts about the need for, or the chances of survival of, the Association. We now witness the existence and steady growth of what has become the undisputed major police organisation in the world, both in numerical strength and influence. It was only through the efforts of the early pioneers in more than one country, and the teamwork which this entailed, which has continued to ensure its success.

As the Association grows older, and its pioneers pass on, new leaders are around to maintain our growth and expansion of activities. If any organisation is to survive and grow, it must have new, young members coming in to take on the many tasks that its officers have to undertake. The IPA is a democratic body, and every position is open to all, form the branch officers to the very top - the International Presidency.

Many celebrations have been held in most sections to mark anniversaries, but the most important will be The Golden Anniversary celebrations, planned to coincide with The World Congress of the IPA which will take place in
Bournemouth from 7/13 May in the year 2000. Delegates, observers and members from over fifty National Sections will be there. A very hard working committee is busy even now, to ensure the success the event deserves.

You can assist to make this possible if you are a member. Please try to enrol at least one new member and help your branch or regional activities. If you are a lapsed member, why not rejoin? If you wonder whether this is for you, read about it in the literature that is available.

As the founder of the IPA and former International Secretary General, I can tell you that you will not only find membership interesting but by joining this Association you will also be well rewarded by the great feeling of belonging.

Having lived my three score years and ten - luckily plus another ten - I still enjoy my membership of the Association, and the friendship of thousands of people around the world.

Our motto "Service Through Friendship" sums up every aspect of our work, and why we will progress towards and far beyond the year 2000.
