VISCOPASTE PB7* - Zinc Paste Bandage

COMPOSITION:
(per bandage 75 mm x 6 m)
An open weave cotton bandage with non-fray edges evenly impregnated with a soft emulsified paste containing 9 g
zinc oxide per bandage, preserved with 0,122% m/m methyl-p-hydroxybenzoate and 0,078% m/m propyl-p-hydroxybenzoate.

PHARMACOLOGICAL CLASSIFICATION:
A 14.2 Wound dressings.

PHARMACOLOGICAL ACTION :
Zinc paste bandage has mild astringent and antiseptic properties.

INDICATIONS:
Varicose ulcers, eczemas and pruritis.

CONTRA-INDICATIONS:
Allergy to an ingredient of the paste.

WARNINGS:
The bandage does not dry to a thin shell but remains pliable providing it is covered with a supporting bandage to retain moisture and keep it in position.

DOSAGE AND DIRECTIONS FOR USE:
The ulcer should be cleansed and appropriate medication applied if necessary. The skin surrounding the ulcer should be protected from exudate flow.

Bandaging should be commenced at the base of the toes, and should pass around the heel and back across the dorsum of the foot. The bandage should then be cut and the process repeated to give adequate coverage of the heel.

The final turn is taken around the foot and onto the ankle. Behind the malleolus form a fold, and commence bandaging in the opposite direction. Folding and reversing avoids encircling turns and aids removal. Make one and a half turns, fold back, and repeat until the bandage reaches the tibial tubercle and is slightly higher at the back.

Tucks and folds over bony prominences should be avoided. A crepe or other compression bandage should then be applied to provide elastic support and compensate for the venous defect.

Dressing changes may conveniently be made at weekly intervals if oedema is adequately controlled, or at longer intervals of up to 14 days.

SIDE EFFECTS AND SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS:
May produce local allergic reactions and produce altered skin pigmentation.
