PHARMACOLOGICAL CLASSIFICATION:
A: 13.6 Rubefacients.
PHARMACOLOGICAL ACTION:
Methyl nicotinate has a vasodilatory action on the capillaries and thus promotes the circulation of blood to the affected area. The increased blood flow provides a sensation of warmth to the skin and surrounding muscles.
Methyl salicylate and Oleoresin capsicum are counter-irritants which increase the blood flow to the area and remove the body wastes resulting from exertion or strain.
INDICATIONS:
Sloan's Heat Rub provides symptomatic relief from the pain associated with muscle stiffness, strains and sprains, rheumatism, fibrositis, lumbago, backache and muscular cramps.
CONTRA-INDICATIONS:
Should not be applied to broken skin.
WARNING:
Contains CAMPHOR which may be harmful if swallowed.
DOSAGE AND DIRECTIONS FOR USE:
Apply Sloan's Heat Rub by hand and gently massage the cream into the area of pain or stiffness, and on the surrounding area until the cream has been absorbed.
Note: It is normal for the skin to redden as a result of the increased circulation to the affected area.
Treatment should be repeated two to three times a day.
To accentuate treatment a warm, moist cloth can be applied to the skin either before or after applying the cream.
SIDE-EFFECTS AND SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS:
FOR EXTERNAL USE ONLY -
Avoid contact with the eyes, mucous tissue or broken skin. Take care to wash hands after using Sloan's Heat Rub.
Note: Each person's skin has its own susceptibility to treatment. Where a large area of the body is affected, it is advisable to do a small test patch to check for sensitivity. In the case of sensitive skin, wipe off cream after half to one minute.
KNOWN SYMPTOMS OF OVERDOSAGE AND PARTICULARS OF ITS TREATMENT:
In the case of accidental swallowing, the following symptoms may appear: dizziness, tinnitus, sweating, nausea and vomiting, mental confusion and hyperventilation. More serious signs of toxicity include fever, ketosis and acidosis.
