PHARMACOLOGICAL ACTION: When used topically polymyxin B sulphate and zinc bacitracin are rarely irritating and absorption from the skin is insignificant. The index of allergenicity of this combination has been shown over the years to be very low, and since these antibiotics are seldom used systemically, the patient is spared sensitisation to those antibiotics which might later be required systemically. Polymyxin B sulphate attacks gram-negative bacilli including clinically-isolated strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. This organism is conspicuously absent from the spectra of most other antibiotic agents, but it is highly susceptible to polymyxin B sulphate which is acknowledged to be the most effective agent known for the treatment of Pseudomonas infections.
Zinc bacitracin is highly active against gram-positive bacilli and cocci and extends the spectrum to include haemolytic Streptococci, thus completing the antibacterial range of POLYSPORIN Ointment.
INDICATIONS: POLYSPORIN Ointment is indicated in the treatment of infected superficial skin lesions, and for infected wounds and burns. Other indications include infected ulcers, impetigo and sycosis barbae (barbers rash) and pyoderma.
CONTRA-INDICATIONS: POLYSPORIN Ointment should not be used in individuals who have shown sensitivity to any of the components.
DOSAGE AND DIRECTIONS FOR USE: POLYSPORIN Ointment should be applied thinly over the infected area which may be left exposed or covered with a dressing if desired. Two or more applications a day may be necessary depending on the severity of the infection, and treatment should be continued until infection is controlled and healing complete.
SIDE-EFFECTS AND SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS: As with other antibiotic preparations, prolonged use may result in overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms. There is a possibility that POLYSPORIN could cause staining and users should take adequate precautions.
