PROPRIETARY NAME
(and dosage form):

POTASSIUM CHLORIDE SOLUTION, STRONG 15% m/v INTRAMED

COMPOSITION:
Each 10 mL ampoule contains 1,5 g
Potassium Chloride.

PHARMACOLOGICAL CLASSIFICATION:
A 24 - Mineral Substitutes. Electrolytes

PHARMACOLOGICAL ACTION:
Potassium is important in electrolyte metabolism because of the specific physiological effects of the ion, related primarily to the electrical excitability of cells; the relationship between acid-base disturbances and potassium depletion and the general effects of imbalance on cellular metabolism.

INDICATIONS:
Potassium deficiency.

CONTRA-INDICATIONS:
When injected intravenously, an excess of potassium ions produces depression of the heart and may cause cardiac arrest. Poisoning may occur from the intravenous injection of even small doses of potassium ions when excretion is delayed, as in the presence of renal insufficiency.

WARNING:
THIS PARENTERAL SOLUTION MAY ONLY BE INFUSED AND SHOULD NEVER BE INJECTED DIRECTLY INTO A VEIN. THE SOLUTION MUST NOT BE INJECTED UNLESS DILUTED.

DOSAGE AND DIRECTIONS FOR USE:
Parenteral solution; for intravenous infusion –according to patient's needs.

SIDE EFFECTS AND SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS:
Intravenous injections should be given slowly as high blood concentrations may affect cardiac function. Potassium salts should be given cautiously to patients with renal or adrenal insufficiency, acute dehydration, or heat cramp. Care should be exercised if potassium salts are given concomitantly with potassium-sparing diuretics.

KNOWN SYMPTOMS OF OVERDOSAGE AND PARTICULARS OF ITS TREATMENT:
Depression of the heart and cardiac arrest. Severe cardiac toxicity, which requires immediate attention may be treated by the intravenous injection over 1 to 5 minutes, of 10 to 30 mL of Calcium Gluconate Injection, with ECG monitoring. Serum concentrations of potassium may be temporarily reduced by infusions of dextrose given in conjunction with Insulin Injection subcutaneously.
