PHARMACOLOGICAL ACTION
PERACON EXPECTORANT is a combination of isoaminile and ammonium chloride.
Isoaminile suppresses the cough reflex by a selective influence exerted on the cough centre. Other centres in the cerebrum, brainstem or periphery are not affected at recommended dosages. Isoaminile is not related to the opium alkaloids or any other substances exerting a strong central influence.

INDICATIONS
For the alleviation of cough

CONTRA-INDICATIONS
Impaired hepatic or renal function

DOSAGE AND DIRECTIONS FOR USE

Children: 1 to 6 years: Half medicine measureful (2,5 mL) three times daily
Older than 6 years: One medicine measureful (5 mL) two to three times daily

SIDE-EFFECTS AND SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS
There are no known side-effects at recommended dosages. The dosage should be individually adapted in patients with complicated respiratory tract infections. The diuretic and urinary acidifying properties of ammonium chloride must be kept in mind when prescribing dosages in excess of those recommended.

KNOWN SYMPTOMS OF OVERDOSAGE AND PARTICULARS OF ITS TREATMENT
Massive overdoses of isoaminile have caused temporary side-effects such as dizziness, blurred vision, lack of co-ordination and mild spasm - all these did however clear up completely within hours, without the need for antidotes.
Massive overdoses of ammonium chloride may cause nausea, vomiting, thirst, headache, hyperventilation, progressive drowsiness, acidosis or hypokalaemia. Acidosis and electrolyte loss may be corrected by intravenous administration of sodium bicarbonate or sodium lactate and hypokalaemia by oral potassium tablets.
