The 7th German Oktoberfest

18th October 2008

Many Germans visit Prince Albert and a "mini-Oktoberfest" was first held in October 2002.   Visitors enjoyed an evening of dancing and  singing 'volksliede'.   Music was provided by local band The Killiebeentjie Orkes, who are great at umpa-pa-pa.  Champagne cocktails, draft beer, eisbein and sausage were served. This is now an annual event which has expanded to include a braai and vegetarian dishes. Raffle tickets give you the opportunity to win prizes valued up to R10 000. All the proceeds from the Oktoberfest go to the local Zwartberg High School. If you are interested please contact organiser Bodo Toelstede 023 5411 330, cell: 083 448 1419, e-mail: toelstede@deunet.co.za  for more information click here: Oktoberfest

In 2008 Blaskapelle Hemslingen will travel all the way from Germany to perform at our Oktoberfest. They will give other concerts while they are here including one at Eerste Water in the Swartberg Pass and in the Church Hall. Prince Albert is very excited about this special opportunity for us to enjoy their talents and we send the band greetings and look forward to their arrival!

Remember to pop into the Museum to see the copy of His Royal Highness' collected speeches, sent to the village by Queen Victoria and inscribed by Her Majesty.

St John's Anglican Church in Bank Street presents a Flower Festival during the same weekend. The Victorian Church is open all day Saturday for visitors to view the flowers and spend some time listening to gentle music. At 10.00am on Sunday a German/English service is held to give thanks for Prince Albert, Queen Victoria's consort, after whom our village is named. See the harmonium installed to celebrate Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee! You can also take a walk in their labyrinth.

The New Moon retreats will be held at Bergwater Vineyards Guesthouse.  Dates are as follows :

6 & 7 September

4 & 5 October

1 & 2 November

6 & 7 December

Time to BE in heavenly Die Hel!

Diane Wampach, Intuitive Life Coach and Spiritual Counsellor is based in Prince Albert and now offers bi-monthly retreats in Die Hel. Mother Nature resides so gently but powerfully in this unique area and Diane honours this pure force when offering retreatees transforming and healing journeys.

Retreats begin by arriving in Prince Albert by midday on a Friday to enjoy a relaxed lunch, before being collected or driving to Die Hel. Retreatees will begin their inner journey on the road, whilst enjoying exquisite views of The Swartberg Pass mountains and Die Hel.

Diane will shape the retreats around the following guidelines to offer retreatees a profound experience :

Mother Nature's meditation - walks to magical waterfalls, natural fountains, rockpools and hidden caves
Explore the power of Mother Nature and self at a divine thorn tree forest and the Swartberg waters
Plentiful birdsong and SILENCE
Guided visualisations to explore the inner cave & wise voice within
Sunrise moving meditations
Sunset sounding/chanting
Quiet time for walks amongst fynbos and birdwatching

The retreat will finish at lunch on Sunday and retreatees will then depart for Prince Albert . Retreatees may choose to spend the evening in Prince Albert and leave for home on Monday morning and be at their desks in time for the new week!

This valley is mystical and sacred, but you will need to witness this for yourself!

Prince Albert Town and Olive Festival

1st & 2nd May 2009

Our annual Prince Albert Town and Olive Festival  attracts visitors from far and wide!

click here for the Prince Albert Town & Olive Festival 2008 programme

Here you can discover the secrets of the Karoo when Prince Alberters open up their town for visitors to experience the Karoo first hand.

In 2008 the festival showcased some of Prince Albert’s treasures, including the people, the homes in which they live and their gardens.

The Karoo nurtures a creative spirit and this is reflected in the homes in Prince Albert . Some opened for viewing had special architectural features peculiar to the Karoo . Some were elegant Victorian ladies, others are just plain funky.

Gardens too, were selected for their special features. Many of the gardens are waterwise with owners using unusual and clever designs, incorporating indigenous plantings and hard landscaping to cope with the hot dry conditions of our long summers. We boast beautiful Victorian gardens, too with white roses and highly scented lavenders and herbs that somehow seem to thrive in the heat. These old fashioned gardens often have elderly quince and pomegranate trees that could share a story or two.

A town meander took in the arts, crafts, unusual shops and amazing collections not normally open to the public.  One such collection was that of dolls from all over the world, some older than a lot of us.  The mapped route was followed at leisure on foot, by bike or car, depending on the participants' level of fitness.

On Saturday a Karoo-style street parade took place, Cape Minstrels, our drum majorettes and young chess players joined the procession.

Antoinette Pienaar told Karoo stories and our own Story Weaver took crowds on the Ghost Walk, late at night. Brian Finch entertained at a late night venue and we held a film festival.

An Olive Spitting Competition, photographic competitions and Miss and Master Olive Festival for the littlies, added to the fun. There was a Fun Run,  visits to fruit and olive farms and vineyards, a tractor-drawn trailer took visitors across the Karoo and Astrotours offered stargazing on Gordon's Koppie .

There were historical tours, archeological and botanical walks and discussions with resident experts in their fields.

As usual, Karoo food was a major feature of the festival, giving people a chance to try Karoo lamb and ostrich, organically-grown fresh produce, prize-winning cheeses, and of course olives and olive oil and wines from the area.

Food stalls, coffee shops and restaurants offered everything from fine cuisine to local specialties such as vetkoek and roosterkoek.   Which, for the brave of heart, was washed down by the locally produced witzblitz.

2009 will offer just as much fun!
