National Youth Policy Fact Sheet
- The National Youth Policy is a product of over 50 consultative forums throughout South Africa between June and November 1998
- The NYC announced on its inception that it hoped to have a youth policy proposal ready for South Africa by the start of 1998 - it was completed in November 1997
- The national consultation process for Youth Policy 2000 involved over 4000 youth representatives participating on behalf of over 200 000 youth
- The Youth Policy 2000 process was completed ahead of time and on budget
- The Policy process was successfully managed and worked at a time when its strategic staff contingent consisted of only two directors and an assistant director
- The development of the National Youth Policy has benefited greatly from enthusiastic support from the Commonwealth, USAID and AUSAID
- Only one objection to the draft youth policy was recorded from among the over 100 national youth organisations who attended the 2nd National Youth Summit - the Freedom Front objected to the prospect of National Youth Service
- The adoption of the National Youth Policy will bring South Africa into line with both the United Nations World Plan of Action for Youth and the Commonwealth Youth Programme - which commits all members to adoption of national youth policies by the year 2000 -
