Process of youth consultation
In preparing the National Youth Policy, the National Youth Commission consulted different youth organisations, political organisations, cultural clubs and the youth itself.

The National Youth Policy has been designed to address the major needs, challenges and opportunities of young men and women. In June 1997, the National Youth Commission held a National Youth Summit in Cape Town.

This summit drew together more than 200 delegates from major youth, political and community organisations to discuss the process of policy formulation.

Answer the following questions.

  1. Do you belong to a youth organisation in your area?
  2. Do you participate in its youth activities?
  3. Have you ever participated in a youth workshop?
  4. Does your youth organisation conduct debates?
  5. Did your organisation participate during the National Youth hearings in your area?

ANSWERS
If your answer to all these questions is Yes, please write to the editor and share with him about activities of your organisation. If your answer to all these questions is No, please start thinking about forming a youth organisation in your area and write to the editor about your plans, activities etc.

We introduced you to the National Youth Commission. Its vision is to work towards a peaceful and vibrant society where the young people of South Africa can enjoy a full life that enables them to fulfil their hopes, dreams and ambitions.

The objectives of the National Youth Commission are:

  • to co-ordinate and develop a national youth policy;
  • to develop a national plan that utilises available resources for the development of the youth;
  • to co-ordinate the activities of provincial government institutions involved in youth matters; and to link those activities to a national Youth Policy.
