Youth who have left school without matriculating
ACTIVITY 1
There are many young people of schoolgoing age who are not attending school. This is a great concern, because their chances of employment are small. They are missing proper education, and can be at risk for a number of reasons. They may be in danger of becoming street kids' if not given support and encouragement to continue their education. They may also commit crimes or become victims of criminals; suffer great risks to their health or abuse alcohol and drugs. Unemployed young people need the help of government and non-government agencies to deal with the problems they experience. Young people, particularly black people, experience vast unemployment. They need access to services and support programmes, and opportunities for further education and training. Addressing unemployment is not simply a welfare measure. It is an important instrument of labour market reform and efforts to increase productivity and the country's human resource base.
