National service for graduates
The National Youth Policy proposes National Service Programmes for young people who graduated from tertiary institutions such as universities, technikons and colleges of education. The programme's intention is to provide graduates with relevant experience in their field of study, while at the same time ploughing back the skills they have acquired to their communities. For example, B Com graduates can give advice to their communities in many areas relating to finance, business development, marketing and self-employment activities.

Basically the National Service programme for graduates should be seen as:

  • a form of community service by graduates in all fields, eg. In B.Com, LLB, MB CHB, B Ed;
  • serving the community where the young graduate comes from;
  • a career development programme for young graduates;
  • a form of balancing social responsibility requirements with incentives; and
  • a way of promoting a common sense of nationhood, reconstruction and development.

Answer the following questions:

  1. Do you think National Service for graduates is a good idea?
  2. Who should participate in such a service?
  3. How can young graduates be encouraged to work in their communities?
  4. If they are working in their communities, should they be given incentives or paid salaries?
  5. Are there young graduates who are already rendering community services in your area?
  6. Could graduates who teach and support matric learners on Saturdays be an example of a National Service programme for graduates?

There is a committee which is investigating this issue. If you have any ideas about National Sevice for graduates, please do not hesitate to take a pen and paper and write to the National Youth Commission about what you think.
