If you have been to any Model shows in England over the last few years, you would be hard pressed not to have stumbled over the TECHNO-WELD stand. Two bearded pyromaniacs blast away with their blowtorches on this stand, demonstrating their aluminium welding kits, and occasionally repairing sad-looking and mangled engines, tuned pipes and undercarriages from pilots of the day.... hopeful of a miracle to allow them to fly their creations again that weekend, and who have usually suffered from wind (er...from the wrong direction at the wrong time!), lack of fuel (the runway was much closer last time I came around!), battery/radio failure (it should have plenty left from yesterdays flight! Oh, er.. I forgot!) or simple metal fatigue. (I can rev the nuts off this motor better than you can syndrome!) Jet pilots are best at this!
Techno-Weld is, without doubt, a breakthrough in modelling with aluminium. As with all good things in life, a little practice makes perfect - although more practice makes better, and is often more fun!
It is worth reading the instructions carefully, and then having a 'play' with some scraps of aluminium, to get the feel for the way the product works. Although Techno-Weld makes joining aluminium a relatively simple process, the 'welding' part is actually a very small part of the overall job. It is VERY important to remember that proper planning of jigging methods, determining the best type of joint to use, careful preparation, and identifying the best sequence for welding multiple joints, will promote the ultimate success of any project undertaken. Only a normal, propane or butane fuelled, blowtorch is required and this is easily obtained at low cost from your local hardware accessory shop. The welding rod kit is available from Thrust Distributors, which includes very comprehensive instructions and all the required tools to get you off to a good start.
As this product is now widely used in the motorcycle, automotive, marine and engineering industries, the boy's at Techno-Weld have encountered, and solved, all manner of technical and operational problems for their customers and, as a result, have many valuable hints and tips up their sleeves. If you encounter a problem, or just need to check out how to tackle a job, it is worth giving Peter Remfry a call.
