South Africa is a country rich in history, from
the Anglo Boer wars to the stylish Cape Dutch style of the the
Cape of Good Hope, there is something for all tastes. .
|

Groot Constantia, home of one of the first governors of the Cape
|
South Africa was first discovered by the Portuguese
explorer, Bartholomew Dias in 1488, when he was blown off course
and sighted the Cape on his return voyage, naming it the cape
of storms as a result of the storms that he encountered, but it
was not until Jan van Riebeck landed in 1652, that a colony was
established in South Africa. With the arrival of more Hollanders,
as well as slaves, a community was born, which to this day shows
its influence in the architecture of the Cape, as seen in the
house on the left, called Groot Constantia, which was the home
of Simon Van der Stel, one of the first governors of the Cape.
|
| South Africa has a long and bloody history with
regards to internal conflicts, First the conflict between the
Voortrekkers and the African tribes during Great trek in the 1830's,
then followed by the Zulu war between the English and the Zulu
nation in Natal in the 1870's, and finally the Anglo Boer wars
at the turn of the century. The picture on the left was taken
at the time and shows a blockhouse, a small stone fort, erected
to guard lines of communication in the Anglo Boer wars. Many of
these forts still exist today and can be visited on a tour of
the historical sights of South Africa. |
