Opening Africa for You

Bird Watching
With over 900 species of birds, many of them very common and easily found, Southern Africa is a virtual paradise for avid birdwatchers.
Of the many birds found in Southern Africa, 113 species are endemic to Southern Africa, thus occur nowhere else in the world. These include some very striking birds E.g.: the Blue Crane (South Africa's national bird); the Cape Vulture, once on the brink of extinction, but is slowly being brought back to a viable population; other's include the Black Oystercatcher; the unique Ground Woodpecker and the South African Shelduck.

Bird populations fluctuate during the year, with many of the species being migrants, some of them are intra Africa migrants; while others are Palaearctic migrants, i.e. from the northern hemisphere. Most of these birds are winter migrants, this makes summer the best time to go Birdwatching in South Africa.
With South Africa's varied habitats, one of the best ways to go Birdwatching, is to take a Birdwatching safari with people in the know, these safaris will take you around South Africa from wetlands to bushveld, in search of the most beautiful birds in South Africa, this is also a good way to see a greater part of this scenic country.
