very common and easily found, Southern Africa is a virtual paradise

| Of the many birds found in Southern Africa, 113 species are endemic to Southern Africa, thus occur nowhere
else in the world. These include some very striking birds E.g.:
the Blue Crane (South Africa's national bird); the Cape Vulture,
once on the brink of extinction, but is slowly being brought back
to a viable population; other's include the Black Oystercatcher;
the unique Ground Woodpecker and the South African Shelduck.

Bird populations fluctuate during the year,
with many of the species being migrants, some of them are intra
Africa migrants; while others are Palaearctic migrants, i.e. from
the northern hemisphere. Most of these birds are winter migrants,
this makes summer the best time to go Birdwatching in South Africa.
