General

Sable are amongst the most impressive of African antelope, with their long saber-like horns and deep black coat. They usually live in herds of up to 30 animals, but aggregations of 200 animals have been recorded. With their long razor sharp horns, they are well equipped to defend themselves against predators, even against Lions. Lone Sable have been known to back into a thorn bush when attacked, to protect their backs, and to stand facing the attacker with their strong horns. Sable are grazers and prefer open grassveld to bushy areas.
