Kingfisher Lodge, which has been restored, consists of a charming series of six tastefully decorated guest suites.  The rooms and living areas boast an extraordinary collection of antiques.

It is situated in Graaff-Reinet which was established in 1786 and is the fourth oldest town in South Africa.  The surrounding farmland epitomizes the Karoo.  The town has retained much of its architectural heritage and it is no wonder that it is known as the Gem of the Karoo.

Steeped in history, with a rich palaeontology underlying the area and boasting some of the most magnificent scenery in the Karoo, Graaff-Reinet is a must visit destination.  It is one of the few towns to lie in the middle of a game reserve.

Excursions into the surrounding area surprise one with their diversity and beauty.

Kingfisher Lodge, Graaff-Reinet, hosts Roana and Reinette Te Water Naude
Roana and Reinette Te Water Naude

Kingfisher Lodge is hosted by Reinette Te Water Naude, wife of the late Dr. Theo Te Water Naude who was a medical practitioner in Graaff-Reinet.  He was educated at Bishops in Cape Town and the University of Cape Town.

There are some very interesting facts concerning her family, both historical and current.  Dr. Theo's great grandfather, Franz Karel Te Water, a businessman and politician, stayed in Te Water House, also in Graaff-Reinet.  Dr. Theo's great uncle, the well known Charles Te Water (born 1887 - died 1964), was High Commissioner for South Africa in London.  Franz Karel Te Water's portrait, done in oil by Hugo Naude, hangs at the entrance to the wine cellar in the main house.  It is depicted in the headings on all the pages of this site.

Reinette's eldest daughter, Yolanda Te Water Naude, a former pupil at DSG in Grahamstown, is now living in San Francisco, USA.  Her second daughter, Roana who was also at DSG, has joined Reinette in her guest house venture.  Their brother, Theo was at school at St. Andrew's College in Grahamstown.  He is still waiting to make his fortune and hopes to follow in his father's footsteps.

Reinette's interest in hotels started with well known hotelier, David Rawdon.  She trained at Matjiesfontein and Lanzerac and became manageress of the Drostdy Hotel in Graaff-Reinet in 1980.  She was engaged to former South African State President, P. W. Botha.
