Susan and Scott are blessed with a wonderful boy named Micah, an only child. As a family, we live on the campus of Inanda Seminary in the sprawling black township of Inanda. The Seminary is situated approximately 25 minutes north of downtown Durban and 45 minutes south of Groutville. Although we miss our family terribly in the United States, we benefit from the reality that our situation in South Africa allows for both Susan and I to be full-time parents as well as full-time professionals. Micah is surrounded by 240 students who adore him, a caregiver at home who is one of his best friends, and two parents who are able to spend lots of time with him. Our house is a four bedroom, one living room, one dinning room, one laundry room, one office (that doubles as a guest room), one kitchen, two and a half bathroom, "prefab." Susan has planted a wonderful garden in the back yard along with beds of flowers surrounding the home. What she has done with soil and plants is truly miraculous. Micah enjoys his plastic lawnmower (he likes to mow when Dad mows) and his plastic motorbike. He regularly assists Scott in his favorite hobby of washing the vehicles and assists Susan in her favorite hobby of gardening. He definitely prefers to be outside, chasing the cat, picking up any trash that may be in the yard, or just wandering around visiting students and administrative staff. Recently, we purchased a new kiddy pool for Micah. Summer and hot temperatures are coming, so we expect to find Micah always wanting to go swimming. We live with a wonderful young woman named Thobile who assists us with Micah and the home. Thobile also serves as our Chief Consultant on the Zulu language and culture. Thobile will soon begin attending 'university' before the end of the year and she will thereafter be able to financially support herself and her daughter Nonkululeko. Thobile has enrolled in an Advanced Tourism, Travel and Hospitality Certification Course that will take two years to complete. The course is by correspondence (computer), however there is a satellite campus in Durban if she needs support. Thobile's favorite hobby is seeing action movies! We also have a wonderful neighbor named Lindinhlanhla who enjoys reading all of Scott's books. "Lindi" is a eleven year old who lives near us and eats (a lot!) with us every evening, usually after a long day at school followed by cricket practice. His mother works at the school and we, like her, can't help but invest in this young man.
Pictured above is our newly renovated home. The house has undergone significant electrical, plumbing, and other infrastructural improvements. It is truly a home to us and we have invested many hours to make it a place of comfort and peace. Susan specializes in hospitality. We often feel as if we run a small bed and breakfast here at Inanda. Please stop by! You will be comfortable (the guest room has air conditioning) and well attended to.
