Self destruction Questioned

What is Destructive behavior? My therapist considers Hairpulling destructive behavior.

Could body piercing and ear piercing be destructive behavior?

How about over eating?

How about super models who starve themselves?

How about beauty pagent ladies who duct tape their breast up?

How about marathon runners who hit the wall and keep going literaly burning

up and destroying muscle tissue.

How about football players who for money destroy their bodies?

How about bungie jumpers?

How about people who have cosmetic surgery?

How about smokers? Alcholics?

How about people who get tatoos?

How about people who jump out of planes for the thrill of it?

How about people who work so hard they neglect their family? If its their own business?

How about people who take diet pills?

How about race car drivers? Do they need mental help too?

How about people who get their legs waxed?

I sometimes wonder and think that the perception of destructive behavior depends upon societies norms. Their is a tribe of people in south america who shave all the hair off their bodies. It helps keep the lice count down. Hair pulling could be an advantage here. Smoking wasn't always considered bad nor weight. In fact having meat on you meant and still means in some places in the world that you are a wealthy individual. Seems like now the only thing prized is self deprivation and starvation. Everyone can easily Identifiy with princess Diana and her stuggle with bulimia. I have yet to find the same attitude towards trich. Or even obesity. In fact people tend to make fun of obese poeple. I have in the past made fun of them until I got to be 170lbs. Now I see these people and can understand how they get to be that size. And there isn't much help out there for that in the medical community. At least not until you reach 300 lbs. My own personal experience of course. Why I guess I want to know should trichotillomania be considered so bad?. So destructive?. So shameful?. Make one feel so inadequate? So Guilty? Its just hair.
