KENWOOD CAR RADIO IN THINGS Presenter, Greg Melvill-Smith talks to Howard Zev of Kentronics about the new Kenwood car hi-fi system, the "Kenwood Mask":
HOWARD: What the mask allows you to do, is as you switch off the ignition, the unit will close. It will aesthetically blend in with the dash, and of course anyone walking past will see absolutely nothing. GREG: So this is the face plate, and basically it simply flips over when you switch off. But what about the inside of the radio? Is it the same quality as you would normally find?
GREG: What sort of functions do you have on this radio? HOWARD: Well, as well has having a CD or mini-disc controller, it is available as both a radio/cassette or a CD/radio. It has a couple of interesting features. For example, the systems allow you to separate your high and low frequencies, making it easy to add sub-woofers and extra speakers to the vehicle. It also has a two-zone source control, which allows the people sitting in the front of the car to listen to a different source as in the back. For example, if the kids were listening to the radio, and let's say the guys in the front wanted to listen to a CD, that's no problem as well. GREG: Tell us about the signal strengths and reception on this radio. HOWARD: The tuner's got an interesting new design which is called CRQ or K2I. It "widens" the band, and includes an RDS (Radio Data Signal) system, which searches for the best possible frequency ahead of time and then adjusts the radio accordingly. So no compromise in the signal whilst driving. Also it has a 24 station pre-set, which is quite advanced as opposed to the older type units. PRIZE FOR THIS WEEK!
