Palm 5

The electronic organisers have become part of every businessman's toolkit that they carry around with them everyday. Palm Pilot was first to come out, followed by Palm3 and Palm3X, now there is Palm 5.

So how has Palm5 beat its predecessors? According to Sean Heyes at 3com, the Palm 5 is the latest model of the Palm pilot generation. The big difference between Palm 5 and the other units is size. It was decided to make the new model very portable, very sleek and give it a new look. It also has built-in lithium iron batteries, whereas the Palm 3 and Palm3x used AAA batteries. They worked well and lasted a long time but people did not want to have to keep changing batteries all the time. With Palm 5 the batteries are built-in, so every time the Palm 5 is put back in its cradle, it gets charged up.

The cradle is also an interesting new factor of the Palm 5; it is a little docking device that you can put your Palm into and links to your PC . Every time you go out of the office and you capture information, you can place the Palm into the cradle and press the "Hotsync" button and all your information is automatically updated from your palm to your desktop and vice versa. {Image - Palm2}

Functionality must be the key behind it. People want to pick up a Palm and be able to access information straight away. It is very simple, but very powerful, so whatever it does, it does phenomenally well. You can access e-mail, put in addresses, dates and any other important information and access it very easily.

There are over twelve-and-a-half-thousand developers, developing applications everyday specifically for the Palm pilot.{Image - Palm3}

The Palm 5 unit comes with 2 meg of memory, which is the same as the Palm3.

If you want to interface with your PC, all you have to do is tap on the screen and then write in what information you want to capture, such as meetings or appointments. Once you've written it onto the screen, you put in into the cradle, press the "Hotsync" button, and it will automatically hook up to your PC and transfer all the information from your palm to your desktop and any information that has been captured onto your desktop will be transferred to your palm.

The retail cost at present is about R3999.00.
