So what is an antivirus programme? Russel Young from Symantec explained that the function of an antivirus programme is to keep you protected. Many viruses that may come through, come through the Internet, a disk or any mail package that you may be using. Norton anti-virus works by running a little application in the background called auto-protect, so anytime you are copying, loading or opening up files this you will be alerted to the presence of a virus. From there you can instruct it to delete the virus , to repair it or to quarantine it.
How many viruses realistically would you get if your worked everyday? Realistically there exist about 22000 viruses, so the probability of picking up a virus is relatively high. The new CIH virus that has hit in the last year was a trigger virus. People did not even know that they had it until it actually triggered. Word macro viruses are the most malicious and they count for about 20% of viruses in existence. So if you're using Word you are liable to get one of those macro viruses. Norton installation is simple; click "set-up" takes you through where you want to install the programme, how you want to install it and what options you want. If you want a live update, you can get onto the Internet, click the "live update" button and all the latest definitions will be downloaded to keep you updated as well as any package changes. If a new virus comes out you need to download those definitions quickly to protect you. That is why Symantec update those definitions weekly and by the end of December 1999, will be releasing them daily. This antivirus software is available at a retail price of about R399.00. Live updates free are for the first year, after that you will have to re-subscribe at a minimum cost of R120 per year. Contact
