T-view
The T-View is a new conferencing phone that may well change the way we do business and possibly our personal lives too.
"In Touch" presenter Greg Melvill-Smith interviewed Marius Coetzee of Telkom's ISDN Division:
MARIUS:
This phone offers the normal telephone capability as well as video conferencing.
A tiny camera is situated on the phone itself and this provides the visuals. If you know the number of another persons phone, you can call them, see them and talk to them, or even have an on line meeting.
GREG:
So you do you use it?
MARIUS:
The process of using the T-view is very simple: first you decide whether you want to make an audio call or a video conferencing call. If you want to make an audio call, press the audio button and set up the call, as you would a normal telephone call. If you want to make a video conference call, press the button with the TV image on it and you will be able to set up a video conference call.
GREG:
What does the unit cost?
MARIUS:
The cost involved for the T-view itself is in the region of R8000. There is also the ISDN connection cost, and an installation fee of R420. The monthly rental on the T-view is R 220, AND the call costs are then handled as they would in a normal telephone line, and charged at the same price as a normal analogue line.
GREG:
Okay, so you have to have an ISDN line in order to use this unit. Can I videoconference with more than one person at a time?
MARIUS:
Yes. The multipoint unit enables multiple parties to dial into the conference unit, and the unit itself will display on all the sites the image and the audio of the person speaking at that specific point in time, allowing for conferencing with more than one person at a time.
