"In Touch" presenter, Greg Melvill-Smith, interviewed Marius Coetzee from Telkom's ISDN division about how Turbo Access can change not only the speed at which you surf the net, but in fact, the way you do business! Greg Marius, what is Turbo Access ? Marius Turbo Access in principal is a family of products that allows digital connection into the network itself. Turbo Access gives you full digital access into the ISDN line. Greg So if I'm at at home and I am linked to the net via a standard modem, and I want to change to this, how do I do it? Marius Firstly, you need to apply for an ISDN Line (www.isdnman.co.za) from Telkom. Secondly, you order a Turbo Access ISDN modem (www.turboaccess.co.za) and have it installed. You get different kinds of modems in the range, depending on what functionality is required. For home use, I would recommend you go for the Diva Lan Modem, because it caters for a normal telephone, and a fax, and you can attach it to your PC. In fact, you can use it to create a small local area network (LAN) at your home, where you could connect your wife and your children to the same PC and you can all share the same ISDN infrastructure. Greg Interesting - so this is a modem that's a lot more than simply a modem! What do you need in your computer ? Marius This specific unit is a card you fit in your PC. There are also external units that you can connect via your serial port, and even PCMCIA versions that will fit into notebooks. (See the full range at: www.turboaccess.co.za ) Greg What about cost ! What are we looking at ? Marius Depending on the specific product you require, it varies form about R 695.00 to R 2200.00 (Prices in SA rands) Greg What about software ? Marius With the Turbo Access there are various software packages. The typical package adds faxing and computer software to the basic ISDN, and you can also get versions that include voice mail, and there is also something called File Transfer Protocol (FTP), which is a world wide standard. It allows you to access a specific PC at a remote location, and download information directly from that PC instead of going via the Internet and running into a possible bottleneck. This is very useful for companies wanting to transfer large files, like graphics, or big data files. It even works for voice and video files. A lot of graphics and ad agencies use this facility. And of course, once you have ISDN, you are able to do videoconferencing! All you need is a VC package on your machine, and you can set up videoconference sessions and actually SEE the person you're talking to! Greg Well, there you have it - Telkom's Turbo Access is certainly a lot more than just a modem - it promises to change the way you communicate and definitely has a lot of potential for small businesses, allowing them to me more competitive and productive.
