Welcome message from the Sports Minister
It is with great pleasure that I welcome guests and players to the 1999 Mercedes-Benz / Vodacom South African Open, an event which has the double distinction of being the second oldest Open in the world and South Africa's premier golf tournament.
The SA Open has established a tradition of excellence - great players, top golf courses, superb entertainment. This year's contest for the R5,5-million purse will be no exception with its promise of four action-packed days on the fairways of the beautiful Stellenbosch Golf Course.
To our overseas guests - contestants and spectators - I would like to express a special word of welcome and thanks for your support. I hope in your sojourn, you will enjoy the exquisite landscapes and warm hospitality that our country offers. The Western Cape is one of our country's major tourist attractions. In this setting of mountains, vineyards and oaks, it is easy to appreciate this natural beauty.
It is a privilege and pleasure to have you with us for this "classic" tournament.
The ongoing commitment of sponsors and organisers to maintain the status which will keep the SA Open up top where it belongs beside its counterpart events in Britain, Australia and the US is evident - is to be commended.
GOOD LUCK!

Steve Tshwete
Minister of Sport

Stellenbosch is
indeed very proud to be the host city of the Mercedes-Benz/Vodacom South
African Open Championship '99.
To all visitors from countries abroad a special word of welcome to
Stellenbosch - the oldest town after Cape Town in this country.
Stellenbosch is undoubtedly the most scenically attractive and historically
preserved town in Southern Africa. The "Town of Oaks" as Stellenbosch is
proudly known is a haven for tourists who have time to walk around and
savour the atmosphere of this unique town with its oak-lined streets.
The town is ideally situated in a magnificent mountain valley and is within
reach of all major attractions in the Western Cape. Stellenbosch is
synonymous with sport and therefor play host to a number of international
sporting events on a regular basis.
Stellenbosch is a culture-historical wealthy town with incomparable natural
beauty. This combination of factors makes it a much sought after tourist
destination.
May you during your short stay here in Stellenbosch experience the very
nature, warmth, friendliness and heart of this town.
We invite you to enjoy yourself, and on returning home, be roving
ambassadors on our behalf.
On behalf of the Town Council and all residents of Stellenbosch we wish you
every success with the golf tournament."
