Mirror Work

How to put the guidelines into practice:

Question:
What are the benefits of doing affirmations in a mirror?

Answer:
  • When we look at ourselves in a mirror we have direct eye contact with ourselves.
  • When we look at ourselves in a mirror we can easily identify what makes us uncomfortable when we are saying our affirmations.
The telling signs are:
  • We become fidgety
  • Loose eye contact
  • Start pacing up and down
Question:
Why does this happen?

Answer:
Our ego is telling us that the Affirmations are not true and because we have lived with various beliefs for so long and we are now trying to overcome this/these belief(s) it sounds like a lie and our ego is trying to re-assert itself by making us feel uncomfortable. A classic example of this is: We want to create prosperity in our lives. We Affirm: Money comes to me easily. Your ego re-asserts itself and tells you, this is a LIE, with the following arguments:
  • you are up to your neck in debt,
  • you have exceeded your overdraft facility,
  • you owe money to 20 different institutions and you are overdue in paying them,
  • you are unemployed - therefore no money is coming in.
These are only a few classic examples that many of us face on a daily basis.

Don't quit. Persevere with the Affirmations and in time your old belief system will be replaced with a new positive belief

Plan of Action:
  1. Choose a theme that you would like to work on. This is increasing prosperity, improving your health, improving your relationships, creating a new job/career, etc.
  2. Decide on the affirmations that you will work with.
  3. Set aside at least 15 minutes a day when you know you won't be interrupted.
  4. A full length mirror is ideal but if you don't have one then at least a medium sized mirror that you can see the top part of your body.
Get comfortable, either sitting or standing. Look into the mirror and say the Affirmation(s) out loud. Repeat the affirmations as many times as you can.

As you do your affirmations, you may begin to feel resistance. Don't ignore the feelings that come up for you. If you are feeling disbelief, anger, sorrow, negativity, etc. Don't push them aside. These feelings are part of you, acknowledge them, after all this is how you are feeling. Feel the emotions that come up for you.
Be loving towards yourself, don't critise yourself and say out loud, "I am willing to release all resistance". Then continue with your affirmations.

To often when we feel uncomfortable in a situation we suppress the emotion, because it would not be "right" to show our emotions. Society has put many restrictions on us as to how we should feel, think and what is acceptable and what is not acceptable. This has caused a great deal of heartache and confusion for many of us.

Do your affirmations daily. The best times are either in the morning - This will give you a boost for the rest of the day. Or in the evenings just before bedtime. This will allow you to have a restful sleep. If during the day, any negativity comes up or you are feeling stressed, quietly say to yourself. I love and approve of myself.

When I first started doing affirmations, my life was a mess and I would repeat I love and approve of myself whenever I could. Driving in the traffic, standing in a queue, sitting at my desk, etc. It took a while because the affirmation did not ring true, but I persevered and one day the affirmation rang true for me. I still use the affirmation when I'm going through a difficult time and it definitely makes me feel better about myself.
