BIRDSHOOTING SAFARIS
Back to HOMEPAGE
Southern
Africa is richly endowed with natural gamebird populations of which there are
more than fifty species. More than twenty of these species are available as
fair game and are shot regularly. These species include the guineafowl,
greywing-, redwing-, orange river-, swainson’s- and red necked francolins, namaqua sandgrouse, quail, yellow billed
duck, Redbilled teal, maccoa duck, South African shelduck , the Egyptian and
spurwinged geese and eight species of doves and pigeons.

Assortment of Ducks and Geese
Guineafowl
is Southern Africa’s most widespread gamebird and it is therefore the most
shot. Despite of their abundant ness, these birds take some outsmarting. They
are shot in the early mornings and late afternoons, making time during the rest
of the day for shooting other gamebirds. Shooting is conducted over trained
pointers as ruff shoots. A guineafowl shoot can make an experience shot shiver
with excitement and anticipation.
Francolin,
or partridges as some may wrongly call them, offers challenging, yet exciting
shooting. Of the thirteen species that are recognized in Southern Africa, eight
species are hunted regularly. Of these eight species, the greywing francolin
is probably the ‘Rolls Royce’ and most sought after bird. Greywing are found in
coveys of between 5 and 15 birds. Shoting over well trained birddogs are a
necessity as the hunter relies solely on the dog to point and retrieve the
birds. One of the satisfactions of any wingshooting safari is watching
well-trained dogs work.
Greywing shooting in the Eastern Cape
of South Africa.

A ruff shoot in the Highlands of the Eastern
Cape provides the shooter with challenging opportunities and plenty of birds.
Ducks and geese are abundant in the wetland
areas. The Western Cape and Freestate Provinces of South Africa are especially
noted for its large numbers of waterfowl. Thousands of ducks and geese
conglomerate in and around the cultivated fields to sweep up the grain found.
Hunters will be occupied amongst others with yellow-bill duck, teal,
shellduck, maccoa duck and southern pochard, not to forget the Egyptian
and spurwinged geese.
