Overview and Mythology
During the Middle Ages, Rue was used as a
protective herb against evil and also used as a prevention against
disease.
The name Rue is derived from the Greek, Reuo
meaning to set free –this was used in the context of setting free from
disease.
High court judges used to carry a sprig of rue when
they held court ostensibly to keep them illness free from the prisoners
and unhealthy environment. Hence the saying “you will rue the day”
Graveolens means 'heavy scented'.
Also called Herb of Grace since Branches of Rue have been used to sprinkle holy water before
high masses.
It was one of the many herbs used in 'Four Thieves
Vinegar' to prevent Bubonic Plague. Rue was used in mithridate, an
antidote to a wide range of poisons in ancient Greece.
As an eyewash, it was said to be used by
Michelangelo and da Vinci for improved vision.
Rue is said to have been the inspiration of the
club design on playing cards.

Contra indications and side effect
Using large doses of Rue as an abortifacient can be
toxic or even fatal to the mother.
Use only in small doses -- no more than one dose
daily. Large doses may cause photosensitivity.
Sap of the stem may cause dermatitis.
