Cape Town with it's wonderful climate is the perfect place for outdoor activities, be it swimming, walking, hiking, caving, climbing, horse-riding, sailing, sailboarding, surfing, diving, boating or fishing. South Africans are, to put it mildly, sport fanatics, and when they are not playing or watching sport, they're reading about it, arguing about it, or betting on it. Read on for information on some of the various sports in and around Cape Town.

Angling can be great fun in and around Cape Town with areas such as Rooikrans (Cape Point), Strandfontein (near Muizenberg), Swartklip (near Strandfontein), Cape Hangklip (Overberg) and Arniston. Information on angling is published in the weather section of the daily newspaper.

Canoeing - White water enthusiasts will be pleased to know that the Cape's rivers will oblige. Trips on the Breede, Berg, Dorings and Orange Rivers may be arranged.

South Africa's cricket team is one of the best in the world Cape Town's is home to the Western Province Cricket team.Newlands Cricket Grounds is the home of WP Cricket. Cycling - Cape Town is home to the famous Argus Cycle Tour of the Peninsula, which takes place in March every year. Cycling is also a good way to experience some of the spectacular views of Cape Town.

Deep sea game fishing - Some of the finest big game fishing in the world is available here - in particular longfin and yellowfin tuna and broadbilled swordfish.

Golf enthusiasts will not be disappointed as the there are a variety of top class international courses to choose from.

Hiking is popular among the locals, and Table Mountain can get rather crowded on a Sunday. It is not advisable to climb up the mountain without someone experienced who knows the route well. It is essential that visitors consult members of the Mountain Club of South Africa (021 - 453412) before embarking on a trail or climb. Horse racing: There are three tracks in Cape Town at Kenilworth, Milnerton and Durbanville. Racing takes place every Wednesday and Saturday afternoon and information may be obtained from the Cape Racing Clubs on 021 - 5512110 / 7975140.

Running is enormously popular in Cape Town. Many marathons are run during the summer months including the Cape Peninsula Marathon in February and the Two Oceans marathon in April.

Surfing Africa

Sailboarding (windsurfing) is another favourite, with Blouberg beach the main area. Langebaan Lagoon and Clanwilliam Dam are also popular.

Sailing - The Royal Cape Yacht Club is situated at the docks in Table Bay. The Cape to Rio Yacht Race starts from here every two years - the next race will be in January 1996. Rothman's Week reggata starts mid-December. Keel boats are also harboured at Simon's Town in False Bay. Hobie-catting is popular at Fish Hoek and Hout Bay. Scuba diving is one of the largest growing sports in Cape Town and there are many areas suitable for this exciting sport.

Surfing is popular in Cape Town and some of the world's leading surfers are resident here. Spectacular surfing competitions are held during the summer months.Check out the Association of Surfing Professionals for competition schedules.

Swimming is a major attraction with many of the world's best beaches on Cape Town's doorstep. But many of the beaches are dangerous and one should never swim alone.
