The Pretorius family is one of the oldest and well-respected families in
South Africa. The progenitor of the Pretorius family, Johannes Praetorius came
to South Africa in 1666. Later the surname Praetorius changed to Pretorius.

Summary of the descendants, Johannes Lodewicus Pretorius.
On the 8th December 1836 Willem Pretorius died in Spitskop, "Agter
Sneeuberg" Agter Sneeuberg is between Graaf-Reinet and Middelburg in the
Eastern Cape. For 3 generations this branch of the Pretorius family settled in
this area. Then Johannes Lodewicus Pretorius moved to Dordrecht where he died in
1902 on a farm in the Dordrecht district. His son Johannes Lodewicus Pretorius,
born 12 September 1850 was married to Johanna Jacoba Wagenaar. They settled
eventually in the Elliot district. After the death of Johanna Jacoba Wagenaar he
remarried Eliza Rebecca Fincham. He farmed in the Elloit district on the farms:
Tomar, Kings Opstal, Rondavel, Waterval and Oude Kraal.
