On 20 January 1706 Hermanus Bosman leaves Texel in Holland. He travels to Batavia which he didn`t like and on his return trip with the ship, De Overryp, he arrives in Cabo de Goede Hoop on 19 April 1707. He decides to stay. This is only 54 years since the arrival of Jan Van Riebeeck.
The Bosman Family is thus one of the oldest South African families and has been around for 291 years! Thus starts the Family History of the Bosmans in South Africa.
The South African Bosman Family Coat of Arms - A Controversial Issue
This researcher found that the Family Coat of Arms as shown, as depicted on the cover of the book "DIE BOSMANS VAN SUID-AFRIKA 1707- 1965" by Sita de Kock, is not that of Hermanus Lambertus Bosman and to use this is not only misleading but according to the South African Bureau of Heraldry illegal.

Some background information on the issuing of a coat of arms.
The principles of issuing of a coat of arms in South Africa is with minor change of emphasis based on principles used in England. The official view in England as described in Boutell`s Heraldry is;
"Since at latest 1418, it has been impossible to aquire a legal title to armoural ensigns by any other method than inheritance according to the law of arms, or a grant or confirmation of arms from the duly constituted authorities. To bear arms by inheritance, one must be able to prove, to the satisfaction of the Officers of Arms, legitimate male descent from some person who received a grant of arms, or to whom the right to bear arms was at one time confirmed. Conjectural descent is inadmissible".
The First Legal Personal South African Bosman Family Coat of Arms.
Hendrik Jozephus Bosman born on 26 January 1953 in Johannesburg, South Africa is the first Bosman to have a Personal Coat of Arms designed and registered with the South African Bureau of Heraldy. This caused some arguments amoung the family that fortunately was not very serious.
