It might sound like a no-brainer, but eco-tourism ranks as the major reason international travelllers visit this incredibly diverse region, and anyone should leave enough time in their itinerary to visit at least one of the major nature reserves.

Accommodation in the Southern African National Parks and Private Game Reserves ranges from affordable self-catering units to highly priced luxury lodges which are world class from a game veiwing and hospitality point of veiw.

Although most of the regions major roads are 'car-friendly', some 'wilder' areas do require the use of four-wheel-drive vehicles. This is not a problem for the self-guided traveller as there are a number of cross-border 4x4 rental companies to choose from.
