Adventure racing is the world's fastest growing adventure sports, yet in Southern Africa, the opportunities are relativly limited. There are no hard and fast rules as to what exactly an adventure race is. Probably the best way of defining adventure racing is -- a multi-discipline multi-day endurance sport where competitors compete in teams of four or six, navigating from checkpoint to checkpoint to cover vast areas in a number of disciplines.
Adventure racing disciplines frequently include the following adventurre travel activities: mountain biking, kayaking, abseiling, orienteering and hiking. Each event will differ from the next and could include any of the following: kloofing, caving, horse riding, swimming (sea, river & lake or dam), coasteering, rock climbing, traversing, sea kayaking, obstacles & tasks, white river rafting...
This is the charm of this extreme sport -- each adventure racing event location is unique and it is up to the creativity of the race organiser to exploit the environment by incorporating unusual and interesting disciplines.
Adventure racing is about teamwork, not individual achievement.
