If you would like to become a qualified SCUBA diver there are dive schools in almost every centre, with a surprising number in the landlocked Johannesburg area. PADI dive instruction is presented by qualified PADI instructors. Courses range from Discover Scuba Course to Divemaster Course, as well as eleven specialty courses. The PADI system of training is internationally recognized and by far the most popular worldwide.
From small kids (8 years of age or older) to octogenarians can enjoy this adventure sport.

All course prices include accommodation, training, certification and registration fees (unless otherwise noted), use of scuba equipment and qualifying dives. These prices do not include the hire of snorkelling equipment (i.e. mask, snorkel, fins and wetsuit) which is available for hire. Catering is not included, although dinner and breakfast can be provided. Free course accommodation is in tents, with an option to upgrade to huts. Bubble Maker
This course is for the kids. A great introduction to scuba, this course takes them into the swimming pool, on scuba, and just allows them to play around under close supervision of an Instructor. The course is open to anyone 8 years of age or older.
Discover Scuba
This course will introduce you to the enjoyment of breathing underwater. Conducted entirely in the swimming pool with a maximum depth of 6m, it's a great way to overcome any initial misgivings. The course is open to anyone 10 years of age or older. This course may count towards your Open Water Diver qualification.
Discover Scuba Diving
A one day course, Discover Scuba Diving will qualify you to dive to 12m in the surrounding area for up to 2 weeks, with an Instructor or Dive Master. A great course for when you haven't got very much time on your hands. (These dives may count towards your Open Water Diver qualification)
Scuba Diver
This qualification certifies you to dive to 12m with an Instructor or Dive Master. (These dives may count towards your Open Water Diver qualification)
Open Water Diver (& Jr Open Water Diver)
As a certified PADI Open Water Diver, the most widely recognized and respected rating in the world, you have the freedom to dive with a buddy independent of a professional. If you already tried a PADI Discover Scuba Diving experience or are PADI Scuba Diver certified, check with your instructor to see how credit from these courses may apply to the open water program. Completion of this course allows you to dive to a depth of 18m with a dive buddy, and is a prerequisite for all further courses.
Advanced Open Water Diver (& Jr Advanced Open Water Diver)
This qualification provides the qualified diver with additional experience through a structured, well supervised course and and will allow you to dive up to depths of 30 meters.
Speciality courses
A range of PADI speciality qualifications are available, including Underwater photographer, Deep Diving and Underwater Navigation.
Medic First-Aid
An essential first-aid course, covering CPR and other emergency medical first-aid. Non divers are welcome. A prerequisite for your Rescue Diver course.
Rescue Diver
Some serious fun! As a prerequisite for all leadership levels, this course is designed to expand your knowledge and experience beyond a purely recreational level. Although great fun the course is quite serious in nature and context, enabling divers to successfully perform rescues and assists, manage emergency situations and give proper first aid.
Dive Master
As a certified Divemaster, you may supervise and assist with both training and non training dive activities in a variety of environments. Dive Centres and Resorts employ Divemasters to help with classes as well as lead guided dive tours off boats or the shore. You may also conduct the Discover Local Diving experience and Scuba Review programme for certified divers. Nondivers may also enjoy a visit to the underwater world under your supervision during Discover Snorkelling experience and Skin Diver course. This is the first level in diving leadership and is designed to provide you with the necessary skills to organize, conduct and supervise recreational diving activities as well as to act as an instructors assistant. The course provides extensive theoretical diving knowledge as well as hands on experience dealing with student divers.
Instructor Development Courses
The PADI I.D.C. will allow you to get the most out of the world's diving by preparing you to teach courses yourself. The courses are available on demand and are subject to the Course Director's (Instructor trainer) schedule.
