A guest house is run as a commercial operation and is often owner-managed. A guest house has public areas which are for the exclusive use of the guest. The owner/manager either lives off-site, or in a separate area within the property. A Boutique Hotel is a luxury Guest House often large and providing superior accommodation and facilities.

In South Africa, reference to this accommodation type may be a little confusing to many travellers -- guest houses are often called lodges or even hotels etc. yet are graded as guest houses by the Tourism Grading Council of South Africa!
