Réunion is one of the smallest of the Indian Ocean Islands. It is not one of the typical tropical islands with white sandy beaches and coconut trees, but one with high mountain ranges up to 3000 m altitude.

From the breathtaking contrasts of the 3 Cirques (Mafate, Salazie and Cilaos) to dense lush tropical forests, to the stark, smouldering lunar landscape of the "Plaine des Sables" and the Volcano, the 17 km of white or black sandy beaches, Reunion offers the visitor an extraordinary experience.

The mountainous relief allows you to take part in a wide variety of sporting activities such as hiking, mountain biking, canyoning and paragliding. The coastal areas are great for surfing, windsurfing, diving and water skiing, or you can simply relax on Réunion's white beaches.

Réunion boasts a rich mixture of cultures - European, Chinese, Indian, and African, existing together in harmony and contributing to the riches of culinary traditions. The charm of the creole houses and the smell of the spices (saffron, vanilla, curry) will lend your holiday an exotic flavour!

A yacht charter holiday to Réunion offers you some of the best diving and fishing in the world.

Getting around
Réunion can be explored by hiring a jeep, a car or using the local bus service which spans the island. An international driver's licence is required if you intend to hire a rental car in Réunion. Taxis are however readily available and reasonably inexpensive.

The warmest months in Réunion are between November and April. Temperatures range around 27 degrees centigrade. The coolest months are between June and October when tempratures average around 22 degrees centigrade. Surf temperatures inside the reefs near shore are around 23°C (74°F) in winter and 27°C (81°F) in summer.

Power supply throughout the island is 220 volts with square three-pin plugs.

The Réunion monetary unit is the Rupee. Rupee travellers cheques may be purchased in South Africa and are recommended for your visit to the island.

Réunion time is four hours ahead of Greenwich time, and two hours ahead of South Africa standard time.

The official languages of Réunion are English and French. The local dialect is Creole.
