Reptiles of the Southern Drakensberg KwaZulu Natal South Africa

The only reptiles found in the Southern Drakensberg region of KwaZulu Natal are snakes and lizards. Approximately 45 reptile species occur in the Southern Drakensberg with only three snake and six lizard species range up to the summit plateau. Five of these six lizard species are endemic. The area includes the southern section of the uKhahlamba-Drakensberg Park.

Because reptiles are ecotothermic, their habitat range is restricted to areas below 2000m ASL. Reptiles are found in and around the streams, rivers, dams, tarn lakes forests and rocky grasslands.
