Taxonomy: Kingdom Animalia; Phylum Chordata; Subphylum Vertebrata; Class Mammalia; Order Proboscidea; Family Elephantidae; Genus Loxodonta ("Lozenge-tooth"); Species Loxodonta africana ("Of Africa")

SIZE: Shoulder height (m) 3,5 - 4 m, (f) 2,8 m, mass (m) 5 500 kg up to 7 000 kg, (f) 3 300 kg

COLOUR: Skin greyish but often assumes the colour of the soil, as elephants cover themselves with dust and mud.

MOST LIKE: The Indian Elephant, but the two have different distributions. Cannot be confused with any other animal in the Southern African Subregion.

HABITAT: Can be as diverse as the northwestern coastal regions of Namibia and the lush woodland of the southern Cape's high rainfall areas.
