The Eco Travellers Guide to The Greater St Lucia Wetland Park

Introduction to The Greater St Lucia Wetland Park : Development, Tourism and the Environment

Development is unfortunately essential to the presservation of our remaining natural areas, and as strange as it may sound, it is development that generates the funds required to manage the natural resources! In a perfect world the state would carry much of this cost for the benefit of future generations; but then this is not a perfet world is it!

Although certain earlier "misguided developments", such as the pine and gum plantations, have to be eradicated / rectified before one can once again declare the entire area as pristine, the authorities, private and NGO stakeholders have done an impressive job in rehabilitating many of the affected areas. The new lodge developments will have to follow stringent environmental guidlines that protect the surrounding natural systems from degradation.

The Park is already a fast-growing premier tourism destination and offers a wide range of tourist activities that range from fishing, boating and birdwatching, to scuba-diving, hiking and camping as well as offering outstanding photographic opportunities to the amateur and professional alike. Veiwing wildlife from the elevated back of a horse is a wonderful experience, the game see you as part of the horse and don't frighten easily, allowing you to get very close to them. Bhangazi Horse Safaris has the concession to run the horse trails within the park. Having participated in a recent trail, we would recomend it to anyone that enjoys a good ride in the wilderness!
